Even though the professional biography of 2016 laureate for outstanding achievements in the Art of acting generally speaking could be divided into: here and there, or: before and after, the fact remains that all the periods of his career are linked togather by his brilliant acting talent. Whether he’s filming in Europe, America, Hollywood, Zagreb or Belgrade, or working on a new theater play – his suggestive acting always remains recognizable, remembered and honored.
Everything happens right there on his face even before he speaks out a single word. His biography notes that he was born on July 27th 1946 in Bunic near the town of Titova Korenica in Croatia. He graduated in 1969 at the Academy of Dramatic Arts of the University of Zagreb.
Talented, with special acting techniques andexceptional diction, an actor who performed with such ease even the most physically demanding scenes, proved to be equally convincing inclassical theater roles like Shakespeare's Hamlet and Richard III and contemporary ones like Ibsen's Peer Gynt. He started his theatre career in the City Drama Theatre Gavella in Zagreb.
The first big screen appereance happened in "Illusion" directed by Krsto Papic in 1967 and the first leading role the following year of 1968 in the film of Branko Ivanda "Gravity, or the fantastic youth of Boris Horvat the clerk“.
Very soon major roles in Yugoslav filmfollowed. He has tried his hand at various movie genres, good guys, bad guys - both to a perfection. There is hardly a director from our region that our Laureate didn’t work with. His all speaking face in close-up captivated our attention in the films "Red Wheat " and "The Deserter" by Zivojin Pavlovic, "Bravo maestro" Rajko Grlic, "Evening Bells" Lordan Zafranovic, "Una" Milosh Radivoyevic, "Variola Vera" by Goran Markovic, "Llife is Beautiful" Bora Drashkovic,"Dreaming the Rose" Zoran Tadic,"Tainted blood" by Stoyan Stoychic ...
We’ll never forget Rade Sherbedzia from TV series such as "In the Registrar's Office", "Beggars and Sons", in the role of Nikola Tesla in the eponymous series, or as Josip Broz Tito in "The Bomb process" film ...
He went abroad in 1992 where he only confirmed his reputation in films like: "Hanna's War", "Before the Rain", "Broken English", "Space Cowboys", "Mission Impossible 2", "Mighty Joe Young", "Snatch" ... He has worked with many big movie names such as Vanessa Redgrave, Philip Noyce, Tom Cruise, Stanley Kubrick, Clint Eastwood... He played in more than 30 Hollywood blockbusters.
He has founded new theatre "Ulysses" in the Brioni islands with the first stage play of "King Lear" directed by his wife Lenka. Premiere performance of the „Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night's - variation", directed by Lenka Sherbedzia on the same stage in Brioni marked 400 years since the great writer died.
Great or destined, some would say, professional and private role divisions with that necessary magical twist that led this couple since 1990 and the Subotica theater festival where they have met, through the nightmare of the nineties and life abroad, only to confirm that the dream of that one big till death do us part destined love - has come true
That is why he says the following about Lenka:
" I’d say that Lenka is much younger and much older than me at the same time. She is the life herself.“
Besides having good and comfortable life, being imposingly astonishing and remarkable at reciting poetry, he also writes mostly poems... Perhaps famous poem "Ines", wrote by wellknown composer Arsen Dedic, would be less or not known at all if it wasn’t for Rade’s reciting it.
All of the above and more for this was just a part of an endless series, crowned him with numerous rewards: three times awarded at the Steriya Theatre Festival, also "Vladimir Nazor", "Dubravko Duyshin," "Orlando" awards. He made the Press Magazine list of the "100 most famous Serbs in the World".
The "Karic Brothers Award“for outstanding achievements in Arts and Culture will be added tonight to this series of prizes. Medicine and Architecture, as his father’s first choices, may have lost a lot for our laureate chose to become an actor instead but the art of acting has gained one exceptionally brilliant unique star.
